CAPTAIN'S LOG by Bob Patterson
HEADQUARTERS, LINWOOD, NJ - The company has successfully survived both July events at Gettysburg and Camp Olden, and September's event at Cold Springs Village without incident or accident. Kudos to Sergeant Gant whose laid-back leadership style seems to be the glue which holds us all together. The boys have, as usual, been heart-breakers and reb shakers.
CAMP OLDEN AAR
The annual reenactment in Hamilton TWP, Mercer County began with the usual confusion- no union command, no map showing company streets, no one in charge of unit placements. Park volunteers were equally handicapped by poor planning. A good test of one's patience for a hot Friday. Bye and Bye things got sorted out and a spot was chosen. Once again Company K was across the road from the necessary, but right next to the wood and water stations. Tents and the fly were pitched, gear was put away, and the troops settled in for some long overdue fun. This was my first reenactment of the season. Joining me were Sean Davis, Brandon Green and Brandon's girlfriend, Paige Doyle. Soon Greg Gant and his two sons Gregory and David made their appearance. After dark musician Bobby Smith and his mother Cindy rolled in. Bill Hill, Jay Scott and their families reported for duty on Saturday morning.
On Saturday the humidity and temperature were less severe than the week before. Still, company activities were restricted. We fell in with Co. A, 98th PA as third company of First Battalion which consisted of mostly Vincent's Brigade led by a self-inflated prophesy. From all reports, the boys did real well. So did I. There were lots of smiles and laughter in the shared camp. It felt good to see old faces and meet new ones. The ties that bind us together are strong and getting stronger.
Sunday dawned clear and warm. There was the usual glad-handing and drill-shirking as we all just tried to stay cool. Church Call came and went. Ice Cream Call came and we went. MMMMM good! I shook hands with former member Jim Racz! No, it didn't snow. Nor did the nether regions freeze over. Looks like everyone's decided to move on. So, let's move on. The Battle was forgetable and the rebs won. Bo-o-o-o-o. Packing up was easy and since camp was at the front of the event area this year, getting on the road was easy, too.
ADMINISTRATIVE
Members are reminded that they are fully responsible for the conduct and behavior of their guests, whether military or civilian, family or friends, while on the company street. Proper period clothing- worn properly- is a must for all who stay in camp. No such requirements exist for those family or friends just visiting. I especially want to note the company's policy on alcohol- anyone providing alcohol to a minor will immediately be dismissed from the company. Any minor caught drinking alcohol will immediately be dismissed from the company. Those rules were added to our Constitution by the membership, for the membership. It is each member's responsibility to see that their guests understand and comply with all company rules. We really don't have many rules, but those we have, we have for a reason.
COLD SPRINGS
Light attendance at this year's event marked Company Ks annual visit. We did have one new guest in the ranks- Private Greg Gant's buddy Josh. By Sunday he was firing right along with the rest. Welcome aboard Josh. Also present were Sgt. Greg Gant and his other son David, Musician Bobby Smith, Bill Hill, Jay Scott, Pat Gant and yours truly. Visiting our camp were Bill and Randy Cohanick and Bud Sundstrum-wearing gray, of all things, and takig delight at shooting their fellow black hats in battle!!!
LOCAL EVENTS
Oh, did I mention we need to do more local events to expand our local presence? We do. Think of it. Where do most of our members come from? People we know or people we meet at local events. By attending more events we are exposed to more people. The more people that see us, the more that those people will want to join us and find out for themselves why we seem to be having so much fun! Easy, isn't it? Okay, off my soap box now.
Be well,
BP
